Is Arthritis Surgery The Right Choice for You?

If you have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis, surgery may be recommended to you. Surgery should not be taken lightly and you need to consult your physician to see if you are a candidate. Physicians and surgeons are reluctant to operate unless all other means of treatment have been exhausted.

One aspect physicians consider is your age and the joint needing replaced. Technology has improved the expected life of an artificial joint which is about 15 to 20 years. However, depending on your age you may ‘outlive’ your joint replacement especially, if you live to age 70-75.

The replacement of an artificial limb is called a revision. And, just like anything else, the original component is always better than any replacement. So, it is important to explore all possibilities before making a decision.

Physicians look at the patient and consider the overall health of the patient and the following variables.

Age and level of Pain.

The age of the patient is taken into consideration because the artificial joint is only expected to last approximately 15 years.

Pain is a critical factor. If you are in desperate pain, a physician will most likely do anything possible to assist you.

Health and Well Being.

The physician will take into consideration your overall health and well being and if an artificial limb will improve your overall quality of life.

If so, it is better to have the surgery when you are younger. You are most generally healthier and your body is less resistant to infection and disease.

It will improve your quality of life so you are able to do more and have the freedom of movement rather than being sedentary. Also, it will help you maintain your independence so you are able to take care of yourself.

Medical research and development improve each year. What may now be state of the art as far as revisions of joints may vastly improve. So by the time you may need a revision they may be much newer and improved!

If you suffer from arthritis it is clearly in your best interest to educate yourself on the illness. There is a wealth of information on the internet and you are your best advocate! It may prove helpful to have a serious conversation with your physician and your family to discuss the various options. Your age, lifestyle, well being and other health related concerns need to be considered before surgery is considered.

If you do not believe that you are getting the quality of care that you deserve, seek advice from another physician. Surgery should be the last resort. If you are contemplating surgery, make sure you obtain a second and third opinion before you make a final decision.

Arthritis can be a debilitating disease. Don’t let it get the best of you. There are a variety of treatment options available and physicians who specialize in this area of expertise. It is in your best interest to do everything you can to improve your overall health and well being.
